Our Unforgettable Balloon Ride Experience at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

Balloon Ride

During our 2023 coverage of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, we had the incredible opportunity to take a balloon ride that truly captured the essence of this world-renowned event. This wasn’t just any balloon ride; it was an immersive, hands-on adventure that left us with unforgettable memories.

The Balloon Ride Experience

We were thrilled to fly with Mark Meyer, the owner of Balloons Over America, and his wife, Crew Chief Melissa (Missy) Meyer. Based out of North Carolina, Mark and Missy are well-known in the ballooning community, particularly for their special shapes balloon “Carnival.” Their expertise and passion for ballooning were evident from the moment we arrived.

Our balloon for the day was “On The Fly,” a stunning craft that became the highlight of our experience. The morning began with us helping to prepare the balloon for flight. We assisted in rolling out the massive balloon and even stepped inside the envelope to help spread out the fabric as it was inflated by the gas burner. This hands-on involvement gave us a deep appreciation for the intricate process of ballooning.

Once the balloon was ready, we gently lifted off the ground. The ascent was smooth, and soon we were soaring several hundred feet above Balloon Fiesta Park, surrounded by a breathtaking panorama of colorful balloons. The experience was both serene and exhilarating, offering us views that only a balloon ride can provide.

One of the most memorable moments was when we performed a “splash and dash” over the Rio Grande, where our balloon gently touched the water before rising again.

After a smooth landing in a nearby field, our adventure continued as we joined Missy and the chase crew. Riding along with Missy, we followed the balloon as it took off once more, tracking it until it found a safe spot to land.

Helping to pack up the balloon was the perfect end to the journey, giving us insight into the teamwork and coordination required for a successful flight. Back at Balloon Fiesta Park, we celebrated with a traditional champagne toast, marking the end of an incredible experience. Mark also gifted us a special Balloon Pin featuring “On The Fly,” a memento that perfectly captured the day’s adventure.
